Blessings & Curses of the Law

The Blessings (Deut 28:1 – 14, Lev 25:18)

If the people fully obey and follow God’s commands, they are promised prosperity in every area of Life.

• National Success – Israel will be elevated above all nations and recognized as God’s holy people.
• Abundant Agriculture – Crops, livestock and food stores will be deeply blessed.
• Safety & Peace – Protection from enemies; attackers will flee in seven directions.
• Daily Routine – Blessings will follow them wherever they go, in whatever they do.

The Curses (Deut 28:15 – 68, Lev 20:1 – 9, Lev 26:14 – 39)

If the people reject God’s covenant, the resulting curses will bring both physical ruin and psychological torment.

• Everyday Failures – Curses will rest upon their cities, fields, kitchens and daily tasks.
• Sickness & Famine – Plagues, diseases, drought and crop failure will bring physical devastation.
• Oppression – Enemies will besiege Israel leading to defeat, looting and eventual exile. The foreigner living among you will rise higher and higher above you, while you sink down lower and lower.
• Psychological Torment – Fear, anxiety, confusion and a “despairing heart” will leave them in constant suspense and dread.
• Loss of Freedom – Ultimately, they will be forcibly scattered among foreign nations.
